In the first scene of “The Tempest”, the viewers can see how the chain of command works between different characters in the boat, viewers see how Alonzo, the king of Naples, seats in a chair, while another tripulant of the boat cover the sun to him with an umbrella. This shows the first introduction of power and control. Who are those that have the power and those that lack of it. Soon after that viewer can see how a storm causes, causing the ship to sink, and the tripulant of the boat, to find their survivance on a desert island, this storm was caused by Ariel, a servant of Prospero,…

    Blog #5 – Liseivet Zapata

I have chosen the Freedom and Imprisonment theme. In William Shakespeare’s adaptation, “The Tempest” Act 1, Scene 2, there is a that portrays the theme of Freedom and Imprisonment. Prospero is the rightful Duke of Milan and he has a servant, Caliban, a native inhabitant of the island. Prospero accuses Caliban of ingratitude and betrayal. Caliban feeling oppressed and enslaved, expresses his resentment towards Prospero. Caliban wants to be free from Prospero’s control. However, Prospero finds a way to justify his actions toward Caliban and reminds him of his past behaviors in which he mentions Caliban’s attempted assault on his daughter Miranda. This exchange highlights the struggle between authority and…

For this assignment I can see the theme of power and control in this play. At the beginning of the play while on the “ship” you can see an argument engage between several workers. Boatswain tells Gonzalo to use his authority to take over the ship. Later there shoving between Boatswain and Sebastian shows the lack of authority from Gonzalo. This power he has isn’t being “used” for the guys on the ship. Not everyone seems to be set to be in command when given the chance. Lack of power and control is shown in this scene. You can see the theme of power and control circulate in just the…

The play opens and the theme of “Power and Control” is clearly introduced. The power of nature is shown by the storm which is being controlled by Ariel which they themselves are being controlled by Prospero. Prospero is the most powerful due to studies and magic and their ability to manipulate the island and its spirits. Thus controlling circumstances and people. This theme of power and control appears in if not all but almost each scene of the play, The Tempest.

Powers refers to the ability to influence or control others, while control represents the authority of situations. Control on the other hand,  involves exerting influence over something to achieved a desired outcome. When I watched the adaptation of “The Tempest” for my paper, I focused on the theme of power and control. One scene that really stood out to me was when Prospero confronts Caliban. It’s a powerful moment where Prospero asserts his authority over Caliban and shows his control. The way Prospero uses his words and his magical abilities really emphasizes his power in the situation. It made me think about how power can be used to manipulate and…

The theme of ‘Power & Control’ can be visually presented throughout William Shakesphere’s play “The Tempest.” Prospero, who is the play’s antagonist, is also the rightful Duke of Milan and also a Magician. Prospero’s control over the island and its inhabitants, particularly his magical abilities, serves as a clear demonstration of power. He uses his knowledge of magic to manipulate the elements, summon spirits, and orchestrate events on the island. Additionally, Prospero’s control extends to the relationships between characters, reflecting themes of political power, as seen in his interactions with characters like Caliban and Ariel. In Act 1, Scene 2 of “The Tempest,” Prospero speaks about his magical powers and…

Freedom and Imprisonment plays a major role in the play The Tempest. This theme is shown in the adaptation. Caliban and the sprite Ariel experience what it feels like to be imprisoned. Ariel was rescued from Prospero since he became imprisoned by an evil witch that once ruled the island. After being released he felt like it was his duty to prove his freedom. When Ariel disobeys Prospero often reminds him of how he saved him and if he does what he is told then freedom can be obtained. On the other hand Caliban still remains enslaved and imprisoned while Prospero still rules over the land.

Freedom and Imprisonment The theme I chose is Freedom and Imprisonment and this can been seen in one of the scene from the adaptation, where Ariel a spirit who can appear in different forms, was also rescued from Prospero due to the previously witch imprisoned him. He can use his magic/ abilities to do all what Prospero tell him to do, just to seek for his liberty/ freedom, as they agreed, since every time Ariel disobeys, Prospero reminds him that he was the one who saved him and also mentions that he can obtain his freedom if he obeys. This situation for example can be observed when Prospero told Ariel…

In Act 1, Scene 1, William Shakespeare introduces the theme of “Power and Control” by giving one of his characters supernatural abilities and thus developing the theme clearly. It was during a turbulent storm at sea at the time Alonso, the king of Naples, was traveling by ship, with Ferdinand, his brother Sebastian, Gonzalo, and Antonio the Duke of Milan on their way to Tunes in Italy. In the beginning, the storm appears to be a natural phenomenon, but soon it becomes evident that it was caused by a force of a different nature. The exiled Duke of Milan, Prospero, tells his daughter Miranda that he orchestrated that dramatic moment,…
