I have chosen the Freedom and Imprisonment theme. In William Shakespeare’s adaptation, “The Tempest” Act 1, Scene 2, there is a that portrays the theme of Freedom and Imprisonment. Prospero is the rightful Duke of Milan and he has a servant, Caliban, a native inhabitant of the island. Prospero accuses Caliban of ingratitude and betrayal. Caliban feeling oppressed and enslaved, expresses his resentment towards Prospero. Caliban wants to be free from Prospero’s control. However, Prospero finds a way to justify his actions toward Caliban and reminds him of his past behaviors in which he mentions Caliban’s attempted assault on his daughter Miranda. The play opens and the theme of “Power and Control” is clearly introduced. The power of nature is shown by the storm which is being controlled by Ariel which they themselves are being controlled by Prospero. Prospero is the most powerful due to studies and magic and their ability to manipulate the island and its spirits. Thus controlling circumstances and people. This theme of power and control appears in if not all but almost each scene of the play, The Tempest.

Powers refers to the ability to influence or control others, while control represents the authority of situations. Control on the other hand, involves exerting influence over something to achieved a desired outcome. When I watched the adaptation of “The Tempest” for my paper, I focused on the theme of power and control. One scene that really stood out to me was when Prospero confronts Caliban. Freedom and Imprisonment The theme I chose is Freedom and Imprisonment and this can been seen in one of the scene from the adaptation, where Ariel a spirit who can appear in different forms, was also rescued from Prospero due to the previously witch imprisoned him. He can use his magic/ abilities to do all what Prospero tell him to do, just to seek for his liberty/ freedom, as they agreed, since every time Ariel disobeys, Prospero reminds him that he was the one who saved him and also mentions that he can obtain his freedom if he obeys.
