    The theme of ‘Power & Control’ can be visually presented throughout William Shakesphere’s play “The Tempest.” Prospero, who is the play’s antagonist, is also the rightful Duke of Milan and also a Magician. Prospero’s control over the island and its inhabitants, particularly his magical abilities, serves as a clear demonstration of power. He uses his knowledge of magic to manipulate the elements, summon spirits, and orchestrate events on the island.     In “What is literature and does it matter?” the “paradox of literature” that Culler refers to is the idea that literature simultaneously reflects and challenges the world it portrays. On one hand, literature can provide insight into society, but on the other hand, it can also perpetuate certain ideas or stereotypes.

    When it comes to instances where the writing requires interpretation , like in Emily Dickinson’s writing, its like solving a puzzle. One example could be when the author leaves certain details open-ended, allowing us to fill in the gaps with our own imagination. Another instance could be when the author uses metaphors, which indicates that they wish that we seek beyond the literal meaning.

    My name is Jennifer. Feel free to call me Jenn. I just turned 18 (Late November). My major at LaGuardia is Fine Arts and I eventually want to become a Tattoo Artist. I was born and currently live in Jamaica, Queens, NY. I have 3 younger siblings (I’m the eldest) that I look after most of the time.
