What Culler means about paradox of literature is that it contradicts itself, it says one thing but it doesn’t mean it literally. The readers can interpret it however they choose to, like in “Crossing the Brooklyn Ferry”. The way the writer describes as knowing a stranger beautifully, it’s the irony of knowing absolutely nothing but the feeling of knowing everything. The writers have expressed in different examples of showing paradox of literature, by telling us how they feel, see or think though the poems, that may use metaphors and compares the situations to something that wouldn’t make sense but in the context of the poem make it seem more relatable.…

“The paradox of literature”. Culler is referring to the complexities in literature that allow for its richness, however these complexities often contradict each other and that is why it is labeled as a “paradox”. This paradox is essential for the literature, it adds to its significance in each and every piece of writing. An example of this paradox in this weeks reading is “this world is not conclusion” by Emily Dickinson. She writes multiple short broken sentences that often contradicts each other. AN example is ” but positive, as sound”. These 2 things cannot be compared as there is no positivity or negativity in sound, however she implies it and…

    Blog #2 – Liseivet Zapata

By the “paradox of literature” at the end of the chapter, Culler means that literature can either be specific, resonate, and feel personal for the reader, but at the same time, the same piece of literature can be something many people understand at different times and places. In other words, it means that literature could only be for one person or everyone. In this week’s readings, in the poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” by Walt Whitman, there are exhibitions of the kinds of paradoxes Culler describes. For example, the author states, “What is it then between us? What is the count of the scores or hundreds of years between us?” In…

In “What is literature and does it matter?” the “paradox of literature” that Culler refers to is the idea that literature simultaneously reflects and challenges the world it portrays. On one hand, literature can provide insight into society, but on the other hand, it can also perpetuate certain ideas or stereotypes.

Culler talks about literature; he states that literature can be deceiving sometimes as well. We all “read and hear stories” and we all can believe in different meanings on part or whole story. The poem we read can show this. As we all read the same poems but can get different ideas or experiences from it. We all take in the information from them differently. There’s different types of literatures and how one takes it in. He also states,” literature is a paradoxical institution” He also adds to adjust to current formulas. I believe some poems are made to what readers nowadays like to read or take interest. For example…

Cullers “Paradox” refers to a situation where two contradictory ideas or elements coexist, creating tension. It is like a puzzle that challenges our understanding. Crossing Brooklyn Ferry By Walt Whitman captures the paradox of time and connection. The speaker sees both the present and future, feeling a deep connection with the people crossing the ferry. The poem reflects the paradox of individuality and universality as the speaker sees themselves as part of a larger scheme, connected to others past, present, and future. It’s a profound exploration of time, human experience and the enduring nature of connection.

When Culler discusses the “paradox of literature,” he emphasizes that literature does not adhere to traditional conventions, but rather steps outside its own parameters, and that this paradox is what makes literature so valuable as an art form. The process of deepening writing generates criticism and thoughts that try to discover the true meaning of what the author is trying to convey. In the author’s opinion, the paradox of literature can be investigated, studied and also felt and experienced in its conclusion. Rita Dove creates a sense of paradox throughout her poem “Parsley”, which portrays “parsley” as a symbol of life (sprigs of parsley were used in men capes during…

Culler is talking about how literature is always evolving and there isn’t a specific standard or “formula” to literature and how it should be written. Literature is often about how someone expresses themselves, their thoughts and feelings. The poems Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, Parsley, and The Sea is History all described how one individual is experiencing a moment in their life that is meaningful to them. They are expressing to the reader that there can be a relation with the description within the literature.  There isn’t a set formula on how author can express themselves through their writing which makes it paradox. The Sea is History is a bit different as the writing seems to…

Culler says that literature is a paradoxical institution because “proofs” (or how he says it: formulas) of the topic that is going to be developed are needed to create literature and this also needs to follow some conventions. However, literature is sometimes about who expresses their limits, criticizes different points of view and own thoughts. That said, Culler may refer to this whole literature thing as somewhat paradoxical, as it contradicts itself a bit by saying that literature must have certain conventions and rules/formulas to follow, but at the same time you can observe literature outside of these parameters and it is still literature. Poems like Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, Parsley…
