In Act 1, Scene 1, William Shakespeare introduces the theme of “Power and Control” by giving one of his characters supernatural abilities and thus developing the theme clearly. It was during a turbulent storm at sea at the time Alonso, the king of Naples, was traveling by ship, with Ferdinand, his brother Sebastian, Gonzalo, and Antonio the Duke of Milan on their way to Tunes in Italy. In the beginning, the storm appears to be a natural phenomenon, but soon it becomes evident that it was caused by a force of a different nature. The exiled Duke of Milan, Prospero, tells his daughter Miranda that he orchestrated that dramatic moment,…

In Toni Morrison’s story “Recitatif,” the author challenges readers to identify which of the two girls is white and which is black. Rather than simply describing the skin color of the girls, Morrison wants to demonstrate how race has a deeper meaning than its obvious differences. My annotations are based on fragments of the story that illustrate social and racial discrimination, and how they have a profound impact on society as a whole. As we read the story we can identify the cycle of life as a central theme. We can also see how suffering is an integral part of the life of any human being in its different stages. Interpersonal relationships, and the value we give to our environment, especially in difficult times when we believe that everything is lost, are a fundamental part of finding the light at the end of the tunnel. This story is a reflection to understand that while life completes its cycle, we can also make connections with our loved ones to suffer less. Music is another topic to be considered. The effect that music implicitly has…

When Culler discusses the “paradox of literature,” he emphasizes that literature does not adhere to traditional conventions, but rather steps outside its own parameters, and that this paradox is what makes literature so valuable as an art form. The process of deepening writing generates criticism and thoughts that try to discover the true meaning of what the author is trying to convey. In the author’s opinion, the paradox of literature can be investigated, studied and also felt and experienced in its conclusion. Rita Dove creates a sense of paradox throughout her poem “Parsley”, which portrays “parsley” as a symbol of life (sprigs of parsley were used in men capes during…

    Poems by Emily Dickson Analysis

“The Soul Selects her Own Society”  Upon reading the poem, I can immediately relate the soul as the great sense that every human being has to choose in the first instance the person they want to have by their side. One of the cases that I can use to be interpreted is in the line where it says: “I’ve known her -from an ample nation- Chosen One”. As time passes, human beings have the opportunity to meet many people who could have what they are looking for in their ideal companion. “The soul” as the poem says, acts and finds the chosen one. Now, in this other line “Then close…
