In Act 1, Scene 1, William Shakespeare introduces the theme of “Power and Control” by giving one of his characters supernatural abilities and thus developing the theme clearly. It was during a turbulent storm at sea at the time Alonso, the king of Naples, was traveling by ship, with Ferdinand, his brother Sebastian, Gonzalo, and Antonio the Duke of Milan on their way to Tunes in Italy. In the beginning, the storm appears to be a natural phenomenon, but soon it becomes evident that it was caused by a force of a different nature. The exiled Duke of Milan, Prospero, tells his daughter Miranda that he orchestrated that dramatic moment, making nature more furious than usual. A representation of Prospero’s manipulation of the elements can be found in this scene. Prospero’s magical abilities give him control over the elements and it is through Ariel, his servant, that they cause the storm. Through this strategy and with the power that Prospero possesses, he seeks to achieve his objective, which is to exact revenge upon his brother Antonio, and on Alonso the king of Naples, to assert his authority and claim the dukedom. In spite of the storm’s violence, Prospero ensures the safety of everyone on board. Ariel is under his control, allowing him to manipulate the intensity of the storm. In this scene, Shakespeare shows us how he has mastered the art of combining natural forces with human action in a very powerful way. Through his handling of the storm, Prospero illustrates a complex coupling between power and control that he has over the situation.
