In Toni Morrison’s story “Recitatif,” the author challenges readers to identify which of the two girls is white and which is black. Rather than simply describing the skin color of the girls, Morrison wants to demonstrate how race has a deeper meaning than its obvious differences. My annotations are based on fragments of the story that illustrate social and racial discrimination, and how they have a profound impact on society as a whole. It is our belief that shelters are designed to help those in need, who are experiencing economic difficulties, and many of them are even black, which in some way makes them targets for discrimination. Yet we fail to realize that within those walls there are stories, dreams, and struggles that transcend color. As children grow up in environments linked to perceptual and behavioral references, it is natural for them to reject races opposite to their own, and this is where the real fight against racism takes place.
