For this assignment I can see the theme of power and control in this play. At the beginning of the play while on the “ship” you can see an argument engage between several workers. Boatswain tells Gonzalo to use his authority to take over the ship. Later there shoving between Boatswain and Sebastian shows the lack of authority from Gonzalo. This power he has isn’t being “used” for the guys on the ship. Not everyone seems to be set to be in command when given the chance. Lack of power and control is shown in this scene. I chose my annotations for Morrison’s story. I did these annotations based on important pieces of the story. The person telling the story has been throughout the story attacking Roberta’s people or her directly. In one she attacks the kids and moms indirectly and using other words to state her case which aren’t really related, like swiss cheese. In another she doesn’t like her appearance without saying it directly. This shows the ambiguity in this story.

Sonny and his brother had not seen each other in a while it seems like, and the parents had died in the process but Sonny claims to be happy but in reality is embarrassed of what he became. Sonny wants to play the instruments which unfortune led to his uncle killed as he was out performing that day. It showed how dangerous it was for their family and how even while trying to be in a safe place, that “safe” place never existed. How just wanting to do something you enjoy bring so much trouble, and even worse when you didn’t do anything wrong and was minding your own business.…

Culler talks about literature; he states that literature can be deceiving sometimes as well. We all “read and hear stories” and we all can believe in different meanings on part or whole story. The poem we read can show this. As we all read the same poems but can get different ideas or experiences from it. We all take in the information from them differently. Poem 1- ” The brain is wider than the sky” I see how it shows the brain is just more than the brain. All the abilities and capacities one’s brain has and how special it really is. The first paragraph of this poem states,” The brain is wider than the sky … the one the other will contain”, showing that the brain has a big capacity to contain in my opinion.
