The book I choose is “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison, I had to first read the story to get a vivid picture of what the author was talking about. The passage emphasizes the transformative power of shared memories. The way Morrison crafts the character description is so clever, it challenges the reader to confront their assumptions by leaving race ambiguous and focusing on universal human features, The author invite us to see Twyla and Roberta as individuals first in the beginning of the story. The changing perceptions over time add another surface showing how our views can evolve. which really plays with the stereotypes we might hold. It’s all about questioning…

In Toni Morrison’s “Recitatif,” I annotated the moments where the character Twyla describes Roberta’s appearance as well as her mother, Mary’s, appearance. In reference to race, Morrison leaves the reader to imagine what Twyla and Roberta look like; even if we know one is black and one is white, it is not very clear throughout the story. The two places I annotated, where Roberta was described in the story, can make the reader guess her race from their own biases, but they are vague enough for them to be applied to the opposite race being thought of. In those particular moments, one is from when they were little and one…

The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin is a story based on a fictional Utopian city that seems to be “perfect” but despite the looks of it being a great city, the perfection and happiness of the Omelas society depends upon the suffering of small child. My annotations points out the the pros and cons of the city. I made sure to point out the things that made it seem as if the place was too good to be true. Nothing is ever perfect and just based on the people in the city that are aware of the child’s condition with nobody batting an eye…

I chose my annotations for Morrison’s story. I did these annotations based on important pieces of the story. The person telling the story has been throughout the story attacking Roberta’s people or her directly. In one she attacks the kids and moms indirectly and using other words to state her case which aren’t really related, like swiss cheese. In another she doesn’t like her appearance without saying it directly. This shows the ambiguity in this story.

In Toni Morrison’s story “Recitatif,” the author challenges readers to identify which of the two girls is white and which is black. Rather than simply describing the skin color of the girls, Morrison wants to demonstrate how race has a deeper meaning than its obvious differences. My annotations are based on fragments of the story that illustrate social and racial discrimination, and how they have a profound impact on society as a whole. It is our belief that shelters are designed to help those in need, who are experiencing economic difficulties, and many of them are even black, which in some way makes them targets for discrimination. Yet we fail…

Blog 4 ~ The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas

The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas is a story related to an ethical dilemma, where the “perfect” happiness of the Omelas society depends upon the suffering of a vulnerable individual. Based on this, it was that I guided my annotations. Each of them guides us to a specific fact where a vulnerable individual, who in the story is a child the one who represents this situation because he is mistreated and lives in awful conditions only so that the people of Omelas have a life of “quality”. One good example is when the author emphasizes “Some of them understandwhy, and some do not, but they all understand that their…

While reading the story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin, I made some annotations of places of the story I was interested in but also in passages of the story where a dilemma in a “perfect” society began to be explored. In my annotations, I focused on identifying key turning points and themes from the narrative. One of the passages I first marked was the turning point where the narrator introduces the darker side of the “perfect” society, revealing the existence of a suffering child. As stated in the story, where the disclosure first stated, “Do you believe? Do you accept the festival, the…

The story “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin is a powerful, touching short story that explores various significant themes and issues such as family dynamics, artistic expression, redemption and hope, drug addiction and escapism, and many more. This story is significant as it explores complex human emotions, societal issues, and the power of art, in this case, music is the art. Based on the annotations I made while reading the story, the patterns that I identified were family dynamics, personal goals, separation, and the art of perceiving music. As some of the themes were mentioned at the beginning of this blog, the patterns I identified relate to the overall significance of…
