Summary
In my annotations of the story, I highlighted key moments that reveal the darker side of society. I pointed out Guin's depiction of a locked-up child as the starting point of the unsettling elements in the narrative. I also emphasized the contrast in Omelas, where citizens enjoy an apparently perfect life at the expense of a suffering child. Despite their discomfort, they choose not to intervene to preserve their ideal existence. Additionally, I noted the passage discussing the emotional transformation of Omelas' people when they learn about the child's suffering. As they come to terms with the harsh reality, their initial tears and frustration give way to an unsettling acceptance of the situation.
