The patterns in “Sonny’s Blues” come together to paint a vivid picture of life’s struggles and the beauty that can emerge from them. Through the relationship between the brothers, we see how family can be both a source of conflict and comfort. Jazz music isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a lifeline for Sonny, a way to communicate and process his experiences. It’s also a symbol of the African American experience, reflecting the community’s creativity and resilience in the face of hardship. New York with all its vibrancy and challenges, acts like a crucible where all these elements mix. The story is really about finding light in the darkness, and how…

Sonny and his brother had not seen each other in a while it seems like, and the parents had died in the process but Sonny claims to be happy but in reality is embarrassed of what he became. Sonny wants to play the instruments which unfortune led to his uncle killed as he was out performing that day. It showed how dangerous it was for their family and how even while trying to be in a safe place, that “safe” place never existed. How just wanting to do something you enjoy bring so much trouble, and even worse when you didn’t do anything wrong and was minding your own business.…

Reading the story shows the the life of Sonny through his brother’s perspective. The Author is using a repetitive pattern of imagery, describing the moments in way the reader can feel as if they are there with him. We see the story progressing from when Sonny got booked for distributing and suffering from a heroin addiction, to him finding his passion and love for jazz music. The way the imagery is used in the story shows that the brother and Sonny are going through different stages in their life. This story reflects on the relationship that we have with our loved ones, despite the situations that happen and feeling guilty.…

As we read the story we can identify the cycle of life as a central theme. We can also see how suffering is an integral part of the life of any human being in its different stages. Interpersonal relationships, and the value we give to our environment, especially in difficult times when we believe that everything is lost, are a fundamental part of finding the light at the end of the tunnel. This story is a reflection to understand that while life completes its cycle, we can also make connections with our loved ones to suffer less. Music is another topic to be considered. The effect that music implicitly has…

Sonny’s Blues shows the story of Sonny through his brother’s eyes. From the beginning, when he was in jail for selling and using heroin, to being released, falling in love with jazz music, leaving, and coming back again. His thoughts, worries, and aggravation were told. My annotations touch on a little bit of everything in relation to, essentially, the story of black brothers in America and finding their way in a place where it’s not set up for their benefit and how to navigate being family. At first, Sonny doubted himself, feeling that he would do heroin again after being released. Then there was somewhat of a change in where…

    Blog 3 ~ Sonny’s Blues

As we know, the author said that he saw in the newspaper that Sonny (his brother) was arrested because he was selling heroin. This is something that for clear reasons left him in shock and he was afraid of what could happen to Sonny and starts feeling somehow guilty, thinking that probably he was the reason why Sonny did what he did (It is important to clarify that the brother and Sonny had a conversation about the heroine and the good feeling that it produces), that’s why he overthinks this a lot while the story unfolds. However, despite this incident, the brother is still in contact with Sonny through letters.…

    Blog #2 – Liseivet Zapata

By the “paradox of literature” at the end of the chapter, Culler means that literature can either be specific, resonate, and feel personal for the reader, but at the same time, the same piece of literature can be something many people understand at different times and places. In other words, it means that literature could only be for one person or everyone. In this week’s readings, in the poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” by Walt Whitman, there are exhibitions of the kinds of paradoxes Culler describes. For example, the author states, “What is it then between us? What is the count of the scores or hundreds of years between us?” In…

After reading Emily Dickinson’s poems, two instances where her writing required me to complete the thought were “The Soul Selects Her Own Society — Then — shuts the Door —” from “The Soul Selects Her Own Society (303)” and “The Brain is just the weight of God—” from “The Brain—is Wider than the Sky.” In the poem “The Soul Selects Her Own Society (303)” by Emily Dickinson, the instance that got my attention was “The Soul Selects Her Own Society — Then — shuts the Door —,” and I interpreted this line as how our soul has the power to choose the people and connection it wants for life, hence…

    Prompt: Blog Post #3

Consider the annotations you made for Baldwin’s story. How does the pattern that you’ve identified relate to the overall significance of the story? In other words, how do the places in the text you’ve annotated relate to what the story as a whole is trying to illustrate? (About the relationship between the brothers? Jazz music? the African American experience? New York? or some other major aspect of the story)
